Punk tinged black metal that is both aggressive and mournful. As I understand it, this album shed light on the history of oppression faced by the Sami people. Excellent album.
Favorite track: Dollii.

Continuing the theme and spirit of the Reetessä EP, mixing Meänkieli and Sámi languages into an aggressive punk-inflected black metal, the first full album from Sweden’s Ruohtta channels rawer, darker energies and a gothic post-punk tone into arresting actualisation.
Favorite track: Liekin ääni.
◊ This first full-length album by Ruohtta begins with the ignition of a match (taulatikku) and departs in ashes (gutna). ◊
The music and lyrical content on the album may be seen as a continuation of the Reetessä EP although focusing on even darker and rawer sound territories. There are less ambient features and more straight forward Black metal aggression found here. The lyrics, performed in a mixed language of Meänkieli and Sámi, channelizes violent resistance, vengeance and dark oppressive history in the circumpolar region. Gutna does not hesitate, it goes directly for the throat.
Review:
"Although Scandinavia has more black metal bands per capita than almost anywhere else on earth, and there are hundreds of bands and artists covering a wide variety of mythological, esoteric and historical themes, very few, if indeed any at all, have touched on perhaps the darkest story of Scandinavian history and folklore. The Sapmi, the indigenous population of northern Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia, have historically faced erasure, colonization, and ruthless exploitation from their southern neighbors. “Gutna”, the first full-length album by Sapmi black metal entity known as RUOHTTA, explores these historical themes at length, with lyrics written “in a mixed language of Meänkieli and Sámi '', two languages native to the region. Tervaaja, the artist behind this project’s previous releases, had released mostly ambient guitar pieces and atmospherics under the moniker Ruohtta, but the full-length leans heavily into various black metal styles, with a healthy mix of orthodox, blastbeat-laden tremolo riffing, and mid-paced, dissonant, plodding riffs that hearken to seminal bands such as Lifelover, Xasthur and Beherit. A combination of folk-inspired melodies, unsettling tempos and agonizing vocals create a unique atmosphere that weaves tales of sorrow, loss, and resistance against cultural hegemony and colonial exploitation. “Gutna” was released in April of 2021 on CD through TormentRex, and a cassette version follows in July 2021 via Realm & Ritual. Keep your eyes peeled for more from RUOHTTA!"

"A fresh spin on Scandinavian black metal featuring the indigneous tongues of Northern Sweden (Sámi and Meänkieli, specifically), solo outlet Ruohtta is a relentless, torrid response to the “turbulent history of predatory colonialism and forced Christianity in the circumpolar region.” Its debut album is especially damning. “I have released most of the Ruohtta catalog,” says Massak, “but Gutna is important to me because it has a real clarity of vision—an unrelenting post-punk-influenced statement of native loss and vengeance.” To steal from one reviewer cited on the album page: “A combination of folk-inspired melodies, unsettling tempos, and agonizing vocals create a unique atmosphere that weaves tales of sorrow, loss, and resistance against cultural hegemony and colonial exploitation.”

"My art will remain dark, however optimistic I become. I suck in the gloom from
this region, from home, the surroundings, sickness, death. I shall never speak about joyful things, I shall always remind of the bad, the oppressive, I shall always sing in a minor key." - K. Palsa (1947-1987)

Not many bands can keep my attention pretty much solely using synths, but this entity that is Lamp of Murmuur can do anything and evoke a wonderful atmosphere and showcase their ability to blend melody with a wall of static noise Xra Diabolist
